Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Housing
Forum
The BAME Housing Forum is a
consultative body, which aims to influence the policy and practice
of mhs homes. The Forum was established at the request of BAME
customers to work with and advise mhs homes to ensure that our
services are tailored to represent the views and needs of all our
customers.
Why have a BAME
Forum?
There is a wealth of published
research that points to national inequalities suffered by people
from BAME communities in the availability and quality of housing.
BAME households are over-represented among the homeless and badly
housed in this country.
- Some groups (particularly Asian
households) are less likely to be in social housing, perhaps due to
a preference for owner occupation or due to an inability of local
authorities and some housing associations to meet their
needs
- BAME households tend to make less use of supported housing
services – perhaps because of their lack of awareness of these
services or due to service providers not sufficiently taking into
account the cultural and religious sensitivities of BAME
communities
- BAME households may also suffer from racial harassment and this
may be targeted at their home.
The BAME forum will meet three
times a year to discuss various issues and any inequalities
with:
- Communication with customers and
staff
- Environmental issues
- Property issues
- Consultation groups
- Resident Involvement
- Service improvement
- Equality and Diversity issues
- Community Cohesion
